SAIPEC 2021 – Details and proceedings

Over 500 delegates and participants came together Virtually on Wednesday, 19 May, 2021 for the opening ceremony of PETAN’s Sub Saharan Africa International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (SAIPEC) 2021.

Under the theme ‘Post COVID-19: From Global Crisis to Global Opportunities’, insightful welcoming remarks and keynote addresses were delivered by the Chairman of the Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria (PETAN), Mr. Nicolas Odinuwe, the Honorable Minister of State for Petroleum Resoures, H.E. Chief Timipre Sylva, Director/CEO of the Department of Petroleum Resources, Engr. Sarki Auwalu, Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), Engr. Simbi Wabote, Secretary General of the African Petroleum Producers Organisation (APPO), Dr. Omar Farouk Ibrahim, Director General of the World Petroleum Council, Dr. Pierce Riemer and Head of Gas Market Analysis Department of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), Mrs. Mahdjouba Belaifa.Further sessions covered the perspectives, strategies and opportunities as identified by the region’s national oil companies (NOCs), international oil companies (IOCs) and regulators and a focus on Sub Saharan Africa’s gas industry covering monetization and the importance of LNG and gas- to-power projects. Discussions continued with an African Content Series featuring the Chairman of the host Association (PETAN), Mr. Nicolas Odinuwe and the Executive Secretary, NCDMB, Engr. Simbi Wabote as key speakers.

Day 2 –

The 5th Sub Saharan Africa International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference 2021 day 2 kick started with a special African Content session as part of a focus programme first launched at the event in 2020 to address the opportunities in Local Content successful implementation.Chairman, AECIPA, Republic of Angola, Mr. Brãulio de Bitro led the Local Content conservation at the start of Day Two. Session speakers included the Chairman, Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria (PETAN), Mr. Nicolas Odinuwe, the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), Engr. Simbi Wabote amd Head, Maintenance Academy, Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP), Wan Zulfakrurazi b Wan Ab Majid.In later sessions, further insight was provided by the CEO, Mozambique Oil and Gas Chamber, Mr. Floviral Mucave; Executive Director, GOGSPA, Ghana, Mr. Neurtey Adzeman; Chief Executive Officer, Oildata Energy Group Nigeria and former PETAN Chairman, Mr. Emeka Ene; General Manager, Nigeria Content Development, the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited, Mr. Lanre Olawuyi; National Content Expert, Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC), Mrs Jessica Kyeyune; Head of Local Content, INP, Mozambique and Mrs Natalie Camba amongst others.One of today’s sessions titled ‘Fostering Collaborations and Developing Indigenous Companies into Regional Service Providers’ had panelists discuss initiatives that can benefit the energy sector and ensure sustainability across Sub Saharan Africa.Moderated by APPO’s Achille Ngwanza and following repeated calls for stronger regional cooperation in the industry, a panelist, PETAN’s Vice Chairman, Mr. Ranti Omole took the lead of a steering committee to formulate a regional Local Content framework that will deepen regional collaborations in the oil and gas and its linkage sectors while exploring opportunities and charting the way forward for Africa to be fully industrialised by the aspirations of the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).For the afternoon session, SAIPEC Women In Industry, moderated by President of the Women In Energy Network (WIEN), Mrs Funmi Ogbue, provided a unique platform for some of the finest minds of the Sub Saharan Africa oil and gas industry to connect and put forward solutions towards building a diverse and inclusive sector.Discussions continue for a final day tomorrow, Friday 21, 2021.

Moving forward on day 2 also, the African Content Series Day was hosted over three sessions, spearheaded by Mr. Nicolas C. Odinuwe, Chairman, Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria (PETAN), MD, Zitadel Limited, Executive Chairman, Global Lifting and Engr. Mr. Simbi Wabote, The Executive Secretary, Nigerian Content Development Monitoring Board (NCDMB) with a keynote from Petronas’ Wan Zulfakrurazi b Wan Ab Majid, Head, Maintenance Academy, Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP), who gave an overview on Accelerating Capability Development for Global Oil & Gas Industry. Thereafter, the first in the women in industry sessions commenced .

Day 3

DAY THREE HIGHLIGHTS – The third and final day of the 5th edition began with the second part of the Women In Industry session with a live interview by CEO Aftrac and PETAN Secretary, Ms. Patricia Simon-Hart. Participants heard first-hand from many global energy leaders as they shared their experiences, challenges they faced in their careers and their strategies for success in a male-dominated industry. Later, speakers from across the finance sector gave their thoughts and solutions available for Africa’s ever-evolving energy industry, featuring Mr. Tabrez Khan, Director, EMEIA Oil and Gas Transactions, EY, UK, Mrs. Remilekun Soyannwo, Principal MA and Commercial Finance Manager, SNEPCo, Nigeria; Mr. Robert van der Geest, Senior Gas Director, World Bank USA; Mr. Gbolahan Fasade, Director, CITI Bank Nigeria; Mr. Ade Adeola, Managing Director – Energy and Natural Resources, Standard Chartered Bank Plc, UK and Mr. Katan Hirachand, Co-head, Advisory and Project Finance, Société Générale, UK.The event drew to a close after key highlights of the conference were made by key attendees during the feedback session anchored by PETAN Vice-Chairman and CEO, Radial Circle who also heads SAIPEC’s Steering Committee, Mr. Ranti Omole, with a call to broaden the scope of SAIPEC to include more African countries to accelerate industrialisation as outlined by the AfCFTA and position Africa as a true giant and industrialised bloc.Vote of thanks was given by PETAN’s Conference Chairman, Mr. Chinedu Maduakoh. Participants, expressed eagerness for the 6th edition and planned physical meet in 2022.
